What's Happening Around the Nest

An online community helping families of special needs children find and connect with service providers & each other- Seacoast region of NH & ME.

We are grateful to have the opportunity to travel and family that supports us. We are very aware that some families cannot travel at all. And that ALL kids, especially toddlers, are difficult to take on trips. But vacations with our autistic child (who, by the way, is not a toddler) are full of ups and downs. Seeing his joy when experiencing something new makes the difficult parts worth it. But the difficult parts create a whole lot of stress for me and my husband to manage. There are the obvious stressors - restaurants, beaches (aka walking around the parking lot at a beach to look at cars), food, sleep, airports, waiting of any kind.... And there are the not so obvious stressors - public restrooms, constant, self stimulatory vocalizations on an airplane, spotty wifi connections, pools that are just a little bit too deep. But despite the deep exhaustion, we will do it again for our children to experience the adventure and magic of travel.🌴 That said- if that plane ride vacation is not in the immediate future for you and your family- that's OK too. Give yourself grace- we are all doing the very best we can. ❤️
